The following is from The Alberta Institute. A townhall is being held to discuss the options that are being asked on the referendum on October 19, 2026. There is an open town hall discussion that you can register for to gain some knowledge about the decision Alberta is working through.
With the October 19th referendum putting Alberta’s relationship with Ottawa - and the country itself - under renewed scrutiny, there are some big questions that deserve a serious airing. There are also very different ideas about what Alberta should do next, and Albertans deserve the opportunity to hear those arguments laid out clearly and challenged on their merits. That’s why we wanted to flag an upcoming event we think you should know about: the Alberta and the West Assembly, taking place virtually on September 19th - 20th.The two-day assembly will be co-chaired by Preston Manning, former Leader of the Opposition, and Gordon Campbell, former Premier of British Columbia, and is designed to bring together representatives of different perspectives on Alberta’s futurePresenters will make their cases before facing questions and examination from Assembly delegates. One option under examination is to pursue a more aggressive set of demands within Canada - the Assembly will examine what has become known as the “List” of demands and requests for substantive and timely federal responses.Another possibility is greater provincial sovereignty while remaining within Canada - strengthening the province’s role in are as already under provincial jurisdiction while taking a larger role in areas where responsibilities are shared with Ottawa, including issues such as the environment and immigration. The Assembly will also hear proposals for Alberta secession, ranging from full independence to separation accompanied by an effort to establish a closer relationship with the United States.n other words, the conversation won’t be limited to one way forward.Whatever your position on Alberta’s future, we think these are arguments worth hearing. You don’t have to agree with every speaker - or every proposal - to benefit from listening to the debate and considering the choices in front of us.You can register to attend the virtual sessions below: REGISTER TO VIEW Livestream Registration | The Alberta and the West Assembly
