Hey everyone, this is my first time posting here so bear with me.

I’m really into tech, like I follow new phone releases, PC parts, AI tools, all of that. I genuinely love seeing how fast things are improving. Every year there’s something new that feels like a big jump, whether it’s better GPUs, smarter AI, or just cleaner design. But lately I’ve been thinking… are we moving too fast?

It feels like the moment you buy something, it’s already on its way to being outdated. New phones drop every year, sometimes with only small changes, and people still rush to upgrade. Same with graphics cards and CPUs, there’s always something better right around the corner.

On one hand, I get it. Innovation is exciting, and competition pushes companies to improve. Without that, we probably wouldn’t have the level of tech we do now.

But on the other hand, it kind of feels wasteful. Perfectly good devices get replaced so quickly, and a lot of people feel pressured to keep up even when they don’t need to. It also makes me wonder how much of this is actual progress vs just companies trying to keep sales high.

I’m not saying we should stop innovating or anything, but maybe the cycle is a bit… excessive?

Just to add on to what I said, I upgraded my phone last year and it already feels like I’m “behind,” even though it works perfectly fine. That’s kinda what made me think about this.

I’m kinda in the middle on this. Phones especially feel like they’ve plateaued. Like what are we even upgrading for anymore? Slightly better camera? 😭

Exactly, like “this year we added 2% more brightness” okay? Why should I fork over well over $1000 for that

I don’t really follow tech like that, but from the outside it looks exhausting. Like you guys are constantly chasing the “next thing.”
That’s honestly how it feels sometimes. It’s fun, but also kinda draining if you think about it too much.

The cycle is intentional though. Companies rely on consistent upgrades to maintain revenue. If people only upgraded every 4–5 years, profits would drop hard.

But isn’t that also kinda the problem? Like designing products around being replaced instead of lasting?

This kind of relates to a topic we were talking about the other day: Planned Obsolescence

yall are acting like you HAVE to upgrade tho 😭 nobody is forcing you
just don’t buy it
That’s true to a point, but you can’t ignore how much influence marketing and trends have. Especially on younger people.
Also some stuff does get slowed down over time. Like older phones start lagging more with updates, whether it’s intentional or not.

Yeah that’s the part that annoys me the most. It’s not just hype, sometimes your device actually feels worse after a while.

Yeah I think that’s where I’m landing too. Still love tech, just trying not to get caught up in the constant upgrade mindset.

The faster we advance though the faster we have solutions to some of our greatest problems, like advances in cancer technology.
