Lately it feels like the idea of “one job is enough” is starting to disappear. Not even that long ago, the expectation for a lot of people was pretty straightforward: you get a stable job, work your hours, and that income covers your life, rent, food, savings, maybe even some extra. Now, that same setup feels a lot less realistic.

Everywhere I look, people have something else going on. It’s reselling online, doing freelance work, running small businesses, content creation, tutoring, there’s always something on the side. And it’s not just people chasing big dreams or trying to get rich. A lot of the time, it feels like people are doing it just to keep up. That’s what makes me question it. Is this actually a positive shift where people are becoming more independent and creative with how they make money? Or is it more of a quiet pressure that’s building. where one income just isn’t cutting it anymore, even if you’re doing everything “right”?

On one hand, side hustles can be a good thing. They give people options. You’re not fully dependent on one employer, and you can build skills or income streams that might turn into something bigger. There’s also a sense of control that comes with it, like you’re not stuck if your main job doesn’t work out. But on the other hand, it also feels like the baseline has changed. Instead of side hustles being optional, they’re starting to feel expected. Almost like if you’re not doing something extra, you’re falling behind. And that raises a bigger question, should people have to use their free time just to stay financially stable?

There’s also the burnout side of it. Working one job is already a lot for most people. Adding another stream of income on top of that—especially consistently—can turn into working almost all the time. At that point, it stops feeling like “extra” and starts feeling like survival. Another thing I’ve noticed is how normalized it’s becoming online. Hustle culture gets pushed a lot, people talking about maximizing time, monetizing hobbies, always doing more. But you don’t always see the downside of that lifestyle, or the fact that not everyone has the time, energy, or resources to do the same thing.

So I’m kind of stuck in the middle on this. Part of me sees the value in having multiple income streams and not relying on one source. But another part of me thinks that if side hustles are becoming necessary just to live comfortably, that might point to a bigger issue with how things are set up right now.

I’m curious how others see it.

I feel like it started as ambition but now it’s lowkey turning into survival. Like people aren’t doing side hustles for fun anymore, it’s to cover rent or groceries.

I don’t fully agree. There’s still a lot of people doing it because they want more money, not because they need it. Lifestyle inflation is a real thing too.

^ but even that kind of proves the point though. If people feel like they need more just to feel comfortable, something’s off.

I think social media plays a huge role in this. Everyone’s constantly seeing people making money online so it feels like you’re behind if you’re not doing the same.

Not gonna lie I tried doing a side hustle and it just made me more stressed. Working all day and then coming home to do more work isn’t it.
Yeah that’s what I’m saying. It sounds good in theory but in reality you’re just working more hours.

But isn’t that how it’s always been? People used to work multiple jobs too, this isn’t exactly new.

It’s different now though. Before it was like necessity in certain situations, now it feels like a general expectation for everyone.

I still think people exaggerate it. You can live off one income if you manage your money properly.
