Premier Doug Ford is advocating that 8 regional communities, including Waterloo Region will have their regional chair position appointed rather than elected by regional citizens. This is a direct attack on regional democracy and our right to elect who will be our regional chair person. Not only would the appointed chair perhaps not be a local taxpayer they would also be granted STRONG CHAIR authority that would allow them to overrule elected COUNCILLOR decisions.
This is a gross overreach of local government by the provincial government which seems to have become the norm from their perspective. It's time for us as Waterloo Region taxpayers to stand up and speak up. No thank you Doug Ford we wish to elect every member of regional council including the CHAIR.
What do you think about this planned erosion of local government's ability to make local decisions on our behalf as tax paying citizens?
